Wales at Easter

We decide to go to North Wales for Easter week this year with the plan of doing some mountain biking, touristy things and some paddling.  With it being an early Easter we took the decision not to spend the whole week in the van and risk not being able to get our kit dry easily so booked a cottage in Ffestiniog to the Saturday then stay in the van over the Easter weekend.
Due to heavy snow forecast in the Midlands we delayed our journey up until the Sunday and I’m really glad we did, as we drove along the A5 between Llangolen and Corwen the snow was up to 3ft deep and the road closed due to fallen trees due to the weight of snow.

We started the week of with some walking and biking at Coed-Y-Brenin.
We did try and ride the Marin Trail at Betws-y-coed but due to the snow this became impossible to ride up the fire trails the higher we got the deeper the snow became even though there was no hint of it in the car park.

Later in the week we visited Llechwedd Slate Caverns  at Ffestiniog, these were really cool and I would recommend the deep mine tour to everyone. Just around the corner is Antur Stiniog A dedicated down hill mountain bike centre where you can book an uplift and let gravity take you back down the purpose build tracks.
Finally we headed towards Bala where I paddled on the Tryweryn.

VW T5 California Safe Install

One of the options available on the VW California from the factory is to have the safe installed in the bottom of the large cupboard/wardrobe this is something we weren’t sure about at the time of ordering but after having the Cali for a while and the space been a bit wasted I decided to retrofit the manufactures genuine part.

Turns out the safe is just a metal door thats shaped to fit perfectly in the space with some holes drilled inside to secure it flush with the raised part of the cupboard floor the cupboard.

Time to fit Approx. 10mins
VW Part number :- 7H7068191 – Lockable cover

The safe fits in the bottom of the cupboard to the left of the fridge, there are three small pre drilled holes on each side of the side walls. For better access I folded the seat down into bed mode.

Place the cover in the hole and push the supplied rivets through the holes in the cover into the hole in the side walls. This makes sure everything fits as it should, snap the rivets up and your done.

Lee Valley 9th March – £6.3 million Olympic legacy project underway.

Lee Valley PavillionMy first Lee Valley session of the year, an hours paddle on the Olympic course. It felt cold when I loaded the boat in the car, so cold I could see my breath, so I decided not to take the squirt boat.
When we got there we had to turn right and park in a tempory carpark due to building works, I found out the center has a £6.3 million Olympic legacy project underway.

The development project includes building:

  • First class facilities for athletes with a state of the art gym and physiotherapy suite housed in an extension to the existing centre. This extension will also include meeting rooms and offices for the British Canoe union (BCU), the sport’s National Governing Body.
  • A new outdoor classroom, more catering provision and extra space to find shade, shelter and seating in a stylish new pavilion overlooking the Olympic Standard Competition Course.
  • More changing rooms which will increase the capacity for rafting and paddling at peak times.
  • Additional car parking and toilets to better accommodate a very busy and popular sports venue/visitor attraction.

Canoe England Volunteer Recognition Awards 2012

On Sunday 15th April 2012 I helped organise and run a large clean up of the river Medway in Kent, with over 120 canoes and kayaks clearing litter from the river and its bank it turned out to be one of the most participated events of Canoe England’s National ‘Go Canoeing’ week.

BCU-Volunteer-Jamie-Austen

To my surprise I was nominated for my efforts at the Canoe England Volunteer & Recognition Awards 2012. The awards were presented at Eastwood Hall, Nottingham on the 27th October, unfortunately I was not able to make the presentation and even more of a surprise I won the Waterways & Environment Volunteer award.
The award was collected on my behalf by Chris Edge who presented this to me at the January meeting of the BCU South Eastern committee meeting.
